Today, in the world, dozens of different breeds of rabbits are successfully cultivated in the world, and the

are very large in size. But the rabbit Gray giant, along with the White Giant breed, is the most popular in rabbits in the republics of the former USSR.And this is despite the fact that for his normal development, it takes a lot of care.

Gray giant differs primarily in its significant, somewhat rough body and very massive, well-developed skeleton.

Some history of the origin of the breed

The beginning of the breeding was laid in 1946. In a very difficult time, when a country with tremendous strain of forces struggled with the consequences of the recent war, the government set the task of restoring the normal supply of food to the people as soon as possible. For this purpose, livestock breeders had to develop and implement promising breeds of cattle.

The basis for the creation of a rabbit breed Gray giant, which would give a lot of meat and at the same time multiplied well and developed in the difficult climate of our country, was taken breed Belgian Flanders. Imported into the horse-breeding farm of the USSR in 1927, these rabbits impressed with their size, a large and strong constitution of the body and weight, but badly tolerated the severe climate and hardly absorbed local feed. Therefore, it was decided to cross the Flanders with our unborn rabbits, which just differed in good endurance and were perfectly adapted to local conditions.

Rabbits need vegetables.

Breeding of rabbits breed Gray giant took breeders veterinary farm "Petrovsky" in the Poltava region( Ukraine). In the Gray Giants, it was necessary to preserve the great living weight of the Belgian predecessor and at the same time to deprive them of such factors as later puberty, low quality skins and the inability to quickly acclimatize, inherent in Flanders.

Selection work lasted several years and ended in 1952 with the official registration of a new breed. Since then it has been widely used by rabbits in many countries of the world, but mainly by specialists from central Russia, Ukraine and the Baltic States.

Selection of rabbit breeds Gray giant, many experts are still called a real breakthrough in domestic rabbit. However, there was not only not so much scientific subtext, but purely practical reasons.

External features and other features of the breed

Gray giant is distinguished primarily by its significant, somewhat rough body and a very massive, well-developed skeleton.

The ears and head are usually large, with coarse features. On the wide and deep breast there is a small brassiere( in females it also shows a characteristic skin fold). The wide straight back passes into a massive, rounded form of croup. Gray gale paws are thick enough and straight, confidently hold a massive body. The average length of a typical rabbit body for this breed is 59 to 66 cm.the girth of the thorax is 35-42 cm. The live weight on average reaches above 5 kg.

According to the coloration of the hair, the gray giants are divided into two large groups. The first includes animals with a gray-haired color: with a relatively light lower body and black tips of the ears and tops of the tail. The second group is made up of rabbits of dark gray color;they are darker gray-braiding siblings, have a brown hue and a blue podubushku. There are other variants of the coloring of the Gray giant( for example, almost black or black with a greasy tint), but they are fixed much less frequently than the individuals of the two main color groups.

Gray giant is considered a meat-sour cream, therefore, according to the plan it should perform a dual function: to give a significant yield of meat and be a source of obtaining warm soft skins. As for the first moment, then it should be noted that for meat this breed is still inferior to purely meat. At the same time, the quality of the skin with its not very thick wool can not be called perfect. But this relative "minus" overlaps traditionally large-sized skins.

There are in this breed and other significant benefits. In particular, the gray giants have a calm, balanced character, good resistance to disease and high resistance to infections. And if these rabbits require large amounts of feed, feed them with the most different feeds. At the same time, the diversity of food does not affect the stability of reproduction of animals.

How to care and feed the rabbits of this breed?

Due to the genes transmitted by the Greyhound giant from unborn local rabbits in the process of selection of a new breed, it turned out to be rather unpretentious. The statistics record the ability of these large animals to successfully acclimatize in different natural zones.

Experts note that for the normal maintenance and reproduction of this breed no need to create any special conditions, even during the severe frosty winter. You can not even warm the cage specially, but it's enough to make a simple, but quite comfortable wooden accommodation for a rabbit, in which the animal will not be afraid of cold winters. Complicated feeding of rabbits is more complicated. When forming a long-term diet of gray giants, one should always remember that this animal can not definitely be fed. But you can not feed well. Only as far as fed animals can give as many offspring as possible.

For proper nutrition, the following conditions must be met:

  • Sufficient amount of feed. This condition is also achieved by the regularity of feeding. This is extremely important, since cleaning the rabbit's digestive system occurs only after the animal is eaten once again, and the new food is pushed out to be digested. With a poor diet, the rabbit may fall ill and die.
  • Variety of forages. This condition is obligatory, if the rabbit is a desire to grow a large, powerful and prolific individual. Monogamous feeds make the animal weakened and prone to illness.
  • High quality feed. Roasted vegetables or grain with mold are contraindicated.
  • Sufficient amount of water. Inattention to this factor can lead to complications in the digestive process.
  • Presence of Mineral Supplements. They are extremely necessary both for males and for pregnant females.
  • Weekly dietary change period in the off-season.

Some features of breeding Gray giants

Rabbits of this breed are not puberty very quickly. However, at the same time they are characterized by high fertility: the litter averages up to 8 rabbits( in some cases, the birth of 9-11 individuals in one flock was recorded).

For healthy and effective conjunctiva it is necessary to take into account factors such as the age of beast, its weight, genital condition and woolen cover. So, the rabbit is correct for the first time in the age of 5.5-6 months. If the female overwhelms, then she can gain weight, which negatively affects fertilization, the health and size of offspring. Males begin to associate at the age of 6-8 months.

Approximately 18-20 days before the rabbit mix should be thoroughly inspected. You can not combine animals that are overweight or underweight. This problem should be solved by limiting or increasing feeding volumes accordingly. To rabbit allowed rabbits with normally developed genital organs.

Experienced rabbits are planning a pairing process for the summer. During this period, animals can be combined both in the daytime and in the evening. You can do this in the winter, but then it's better to do it in the afternoon. Pairing should take place in the cage of the male, where he feels confident. Before you bring a female, it is recommended to remove the bowl for feed and drinking bowl from the cell.

After the first pairing, the female is removed from the male's cells, but after a few hours, they are returned to rejoin with the same male. The young energetic males should gradually increase the number of rabbits: first 1-2 in a week, then 2 females every day.

The test coupling is made a few days after the first one. If the rabbit does not become pregnant after the first coupling, then it will definitely let the male out. If fertilization has already happened, the female will be furiously repulsed by it. Gray giant - an interesting and very useful breed. Her dignity can only manifest after careful proper care. At the same time, its disadvantages will be substantially leveled out.
