The growth of ostriches at home is not more complicated than that of our domestic poultry. It is enough to know the biological features of these birds. It is known that for the most part of the time in the natural environment, ostriches are conducted in search of food in pastures. Therefore, the presence of sufficient meadows and fields with perennial herbs is probably the main condition for the growth of exotic birds.
It is also worth taking into account the climatic conditions of its region. Remember, the ostrich is an African resident, so it is extremely sensitive to weather changes. In the harshest corners of our country they are bred in insulated stationary poultry houses, as well as in a special unit.
For the successful breeding and growing of ostriches, the peculiarities of their marriage period should also be taken into account. So, it's important to know that about one male in nature has about three females. It is the male after the choice of friends begins to dig in the ground a nest, where later the female will lay eggs. If the pastures are large, experts advise ostriches to put birds at the time of martial arts games in order to avoid the loss of eggs. Females often choose the most distant and inappropriate areas for the nest. But with that you will not do anything.
Oviposition period in females of ostriches begins with 2-3 years, males enter marriage games only in 4-5 years. Eggs in birds are large, sometimes reaching a weight of 2 kilograms. They have a lot of amino acids and nutrients. It is important for the farmer to remember that during this period, males become very aggressive and dangerous, they fiercely guard the eggplant and do not allow strangers to stables.
Features of breeding on farms
The basis of breeding birds is a parent herd, it is usually a few pairs of males and a little more females. From the calculation of two to three females per male, the birds are kept in a poultry house with a walk or in a squad depending on the season and the climate. Breeding ostriches includes a natural, artificial and mixed way of breeding chicks. When artificially demolished, the eggs are harvested immediately after oviposition. For one season, the female can produce about 40-50 eggs. Then the fruits needed are incubated and grown without the participation of parents.
During breeding, this opportunity is provided by the birds themselves. With this method, the female wears only 15-20 eggs. As practice shows, the natural method of breeding ostriches is easier and more profitable, since it allows you to save on the incubator. The mixed method involves the removal of chicks both in the incubator and in the natural way. They are used by large farms.
Holdings at the household
The content of ostriches in winter is carried out on deep litter in a warmed poultry house, in summer - in natural pastures and in units. The room, as well as for growing other poultry, should be dry, well ventilated, light, clean and in cold regions necessarily warm.
Before planting ostriches, each poultry farm must take care not only of the appropriate room for keeping birds, but also about the place for walking. A unit for keeping poultry in the warm period of the year is better to do on sandy soil, as it is more hygienic. On its territory should not be located trees and shrubs that create a shadow. The place of rest and walking for ostriches should always be well lit up by the sun.
It is desirable to have another fenced area, but already with vegetation. If there is a grass meadow nearby, the birds will happily graze on it. If not, green ostriches will need to be mowed independently.
Storage room for
The premises or poultry houses for these exotic birds can be divided into main and secondary ones. If the farmer is not able to build utility buildings, one can dispense with the main, where the bird will live directly. Also in this group is a detachment and an incubator. The auxiliary facilities include storage for feed, eggs, inventory.
As for a stationary poultry house, it should be insulated with a complete shed on a solid foundation. You can build such a barn from bricks and other related materials. Mandatory availability of windows, which in the warm season will open for additional ventilation of the room. In the winter, ventilation should be carried out using special exhaust holes in the ceiling or the top of the walls with a grid.
The walls of the poultry house are best lubricated with clay or covered with smooth boards with subsequent staining. The floor is also made of wood or clay. As a litter, a thick layer of sawdust or straw is poured. It is important to remember that all materials selected for construction should be environmentally friendly and convenient for disinfection and cleaning.
It is very important to build a shed of required height. From the head of the ostrich to the ceiling must remain at least one meter. The windows should be placed at an altitude of one meter from the ground. Near the poultry house you need to attach a special wiggle unit with a grid. An example can be seen on the video.
Ostriches are very greedy birds, this should be taken into account when placing feeders, as in stinging young animals can often hurt each other. If a dozen birds, you need to place several feeders, taking into account 50 centimeters per chick and 1.5 meters per adult. The feed capacity should be stable and comfortable for birds, it is important to take into account the height of its placement. It is desirable to fill in 2/3 of the total volume.
For grass, hay, and sprigs, it is also good to have a grill manger. They are fixed in a poultry house at an altitude of 70 centimeters. As a drinker you can choose a convenient container from glass, clay, plastic and other materials. But, as practice shows, the usual troughs are best suited for this role.
African ostrich care includes a number of activities and activities that ensure the successful conclusion and development of chicks, healthy and productive cultivation, and maintain the necessary sanitary and hygienic standards. General care depends on the season, as well as on the age of the bird. For example, in the winter it is necessary to carry out daily cleaning of the room, to clean the litter, to monitor the temperature regime and the level of humidity. During the warm season, when ostriches are kept on the body, care is simplified.
Successful retention of ostriches largely depends on the purity of the fence and the stationary room itself. Birds are very sensitive to sharp temperature fluctuations, although they consistently tolerate frost and do not suffer from air pollution. All measurements on temperature and humidity spend in the morning. If the room is wet and hot, the ventilation is increased. If, on the contrary, it is cold, but normal humidity is reduced. It is important to regularly disinfect the premises, and keep sick birds in a separate room in quarantine.
Light and temperature
It is important to remember that the ostrich is, first and foremost, a bird that lives in Africa and Australia. In these countries, the duration of the day is much longer and there are no such drastic changes as in our country. Therefore, these exotic birds are very sensitive to the duration of the light day. Especially in the winter, they do not have time to eat all the daily feed in a short time, so the illumination continues artificially until 16 hours. Ostriches also need the sun, so the poultry house, the footpath and the windows should be placed on the south side.
Air temperature is another important factor that, incidentally, affects the internal processes in the bird organism. In particular, the consumption of feed, productivity, quality of demolished eggs, health and well-being depend on temperature. So, for ostriches the optimum temperature regime ranges from +16 to +23 degrees.
In such conditions, females retain a high carrier and consume some fodder.
